Post-Conference Tours

Tour 1:  Exploring Etowah Indian Mounds ($50 USD for the trip)

There will be a day tour (Friday the 17th of March) to the Mississippian period (A.D. 1000 – 1550)  Etowah Indian Mound site and the near-by Tellus Science Center led by Dr. Adam King of the University of South Carolina.  A bus will depart GSU in the morning and return later in the afternoon.  Etowah is about 1.5 hours north of Atlanta and a lunch will be provided.  Price includes transportation, a box lunch, entrance to the site, a guided tour by Dr. King, and entrance to the museum.

Tour 2: Exploring Georgia’s Golden Isles

The second tour will be a one or two night (options exist for both) trip to the Georgia Coast. We will depart Friday morning (17th of March) from GSU and return either the 18th or 19th in the late afternoon / early evening.  A tentative schedule for both options is posted below.  Once we have a head-count, we can make firmer plans.  Price will only include transportation (rental vans + gas) and hotels, but not meals or entrance to parks/museums.  Dr. Tom Whitley, who has worked on the coast for many years, will be joining this tour.  If you are interested in this option, please email jglover@gsu.edu as soon as possible.  Space is limited and specific details will have to wait until we have a complete list of participants.

Option 2 – 2 night stay ($250 USD for a shared hotel room)

– Day 2, Ft. Frederica, Jekyll, Okeefenokee – back to SSI

– Day 2, Sapalo Island – back to SSI

– Day 3, Savannah – back to Atlanta

Option 3 – 2 night stay

– Day 2, Savannah – back to SSI

– Day 3, Savannah – back to Atlanta
